Candi Carpenter has spent a career moving between identities, genres, and creative worlds, so it is fitting that Reincarnation is built around transformation. The six-track EP feels like an artist examining every version of themselves and asking what remains when inherited expectations are stripped away. The answer is an increasingly fearless songwriter with a taste for theatricality and experimentation.

Carpenter’s history gives the project unusual depth. Their early life in gospel music, followed by a move into Nashville’s country scene, placed them inside musical and religious traditions that often come with very specific ideas about identity. Reincarnation deliberately steps outside those boundaries. Carpenter explores the genres they were not allowed to explore growing up, turning musical freedom into another form of personal liberation.

The songwriting is strongest when the personal and philosophical overlap. Mortality, consciousness, sexuality, religion, capitalism, and identity might sound like an intimidating collection of subjects, but Carpenter approaches them through memorable images and direct emotional language. Carpenter’s decision to direct, act, build the world, and perform the music demonstrates just how multidisciplinary the project really is.

More than anything, Reincarnation feels like a declaration of independence. Carpenter is no longer interested in fitting neatly into the categories that once defined them. They are turning their history into something new and using art as a way to heal. The project is ambitious, unconventional, and occasionally chaotic, but that chaos is part of its appeal. This is an artist embracing the freedom to become someone else again and again.
