GNX arrived without warning, as the best Kendrick albums tend to. Following the seismic beef with Drake that dominated 2024, many expected a victory lap. What they got was more complex — a record that uses triumph as a launching point for genuine introspection.
The West Coast textures are immaculate. Dave Free and Kendrick have created a sonic world that feels rooted in Compton while reaching toward something universal. The samples are inspired, the drums hit harder than anything on Mr. Morale, and Kendrick’s pen remains the sharpest in rap.
There are moments here — particularly on the run from track four to track seven — that rank among the best work of his career. This is not a perfect album. But it is a genuinely great one, and proof that even at the top of the game, Lamar is still hungry.
