Everyone knows the feeling. The moment right before you say the thing you’ve been sitting on for weeks, the second where it could go either way and there’s no taking it back once it’s out. Lily Madison has written a whole song about that second, and called it ‘This Is It’.

The Kent-based artist releases the single on 14th August, and it’s built almost entirely around that suspended moment of risk. Madison has described the title as carrying two opposite meanings at once, the relief of things going exactly right, or the sting of watching something end. Rather than choosing one, she lets both sit inside the song at the same time.

The sound leans heavily on 90s soft rock, with The Sundays, The Cranberries and Fleetwood Mac named as direct touchpoints. It’s a sound built for exactly this kind of emotional ambiguity, understated instrumentation, guitars, bass, drums, tambourine, that leaves room for the lyric to carry the weight rather than the production.

What comes through most is how unguarded the writing is. Madison has talked openly about wanting her music to be a place for honesty and vulnerability, shaped in part by years spent immersed in her local gig scene and the community she found there. ‘This Is It’ feels like a direct product of that, a song that trusts the listener with something real rather than performing certainty it doesn’t have.

It’s also just the beginning of a bigger run. Further singles and a full EP are planned over the coming months, and if this track is any indication, Madison is working towards a body of work built on the same emotional honesty.
