nineplanfailed Return From the Shadows With “The Protector”
South Wales three-piece nineplanfailed are back, and they don’t sound like a band revisiting old glories. After a long hiatus, the post-punk outfit has had a busy 2026, with a run of singles, a live recording and a new EP made with producer Joe Gibb, whose credits include Depeche Mode, Gang of Four and The Cure.
A Band Reborn, Not Revived
nineplanfailed first formed in the early 2010s and released their debut EP through Death Monkey Records before going quiet for several years. When the members reunited, they came back with a different outlook. They are older and more deliberate now, but no less keen to push themselves.
Vocalist and bassist Demetrie Wyatt, Gareth Eveleigh on guitars, synth and vocals, and Nathan Griffiths on drums and vocals say outright that this is not a nostalgia project. The band has no interest in fitting neatly into a genre or chasing trends. The aim is simple: write the strongest songs they can, explore interesting sounds and keep an identity that is clearly their own.
The Sound of Tension
Their music sits where post-punk, new wave and alternative rock meet, with a thread of industrial influence underneath. Driving, melodic basslines lead the way, abrasive guitars and insistent rhythms push against them, and electronic textures add an uneasy edge.
What sets nineplanfailed apart is the collision between accessible songwriting and less comfortable ideas. The hooks are there and they stick, but the music around them rarely feels safe or predictable. That push and pull is what makes their recent releases worth hearing.
A Remarkably Active 2026
The comeback began in April with the single house. Your P*rn Is Not My P*rn followed in August, and The Protector arrived in October. Alongside the studio work, the band released At Hydrus Live, a recording of the raw, physical energy of their live shows.
The new songs come from a four-track EP that the band is releasing to streaming platforms one track at a time. The complete EP is already available on Bandcamp.
The Protector: The Perfect Starting Point
For newcomers, The Protector is the best way in. A tight rhythm section and angular guitar work carry a constant sense of unease. Lyrically, the song looks at protection and fear, and at the troubling relationship that can form between the two. It comes with an official music video that adds to its brooding atmosphere.
The single has already picked up independent radio support. Radio Wigwam added it to its rotation, and through Get Radio Airplay the band’s music has been played on stations in several countries.
Independent and Unapologetic
nineplanfailed are fully independent and self-funded, and they are encouraged by how people have responded to their recent work. The long break changed how they relate to music. They worry less about expectations or conventional ideas of success and care more about making music they are proud of.
They are still recording, releasing and playing live, and their return looks like the start of a new chapter rather than a farewell lap.
