Some debuts introduce a band. Others introduce a worldview. Sakai’s Do You Like Me Now? belongs firmly in the latter category, presenting four songs that combine emotional candour with ambitious musicianship and a refreshing disregard for genre conventions. Drawing on indie rock, soul, jazz, blues and Japanese musical traditions, the band create a sound that feels immediately distinctive without ever sounding self consciously eclectic.

Much of that success comes down to Marié Sakai, whose vocal performances carry an effortless emotional authority. Whether delivering quiet introspection or swelling into moments of raw release, she remains a compelling narrator throughout. Nowhere is that more apparent than on “Orange Tree”, a beautifully realised composition inspired by classical Japanese poetry and enriched by the Hirajoshi scale and delicate flute passages. It is an elegant meditation on impermanence that avoids sentimentality by embracing emotional complexity.

The remaining tracks reveal different shades of the band’s identity. “Out” balances driving instrumentation with deeply personal lyricism, capturing the familiar experience of wanting to engage fully with life while simultaneously shrinking away from it. “Wanted” follows with understated power, elevated by Conner Currie’s luminous guitar harmonics that lend the song both fragility and warmth. Every arrangement feels purposeful, giving each musician space to contribute without overwhelming the emotional core.

Closing track “Do You Like Me Now?” provides the EP’s defining statement. Its exploration of people pleasing and fragmented identity resonates because it refuses simplistic conclusions. Instead, the band allow uncertainty to remain intact, trusting listeners to connect with its emotional honesty rather than spelling everything out. It is a mature approach that feels increasingly rare within contemporary alternative music.

The comparisons to Florence + The Machine, Amy Winehouse, Hozier and Radiohead are understandable, but Sakai already possess a musical identity that stands comfortably on its own. Do You Like Me Now? is an impressive debut, one that announces a band with the confidence to take creative risks and the songwriting ability to make those risks worthwhile.
