On the EP ‘NUMB’, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Ty Ellenbogen explores the complexities of dissociation and emotional disconnection, through a search for ways to find your way back to yourself.

Ellenbogen began his journey learning guitar, drums and saxophone at just 9-years-old. When he reached 16, he took his passion for music a step further by beginning to write his own songs and producing them himself. For Ellenbogen, the COVID-19 pandemic became a defining moment in his perspective on music, when he began to recognise the way that music could transcend physical, social, and emotional barriers. This realisation led him to view music as a powerful means of connecting with others, providing comfort, and assuring people that they’re not alone in what they feel. These ideas have come to shape both his songwriting process and the way he chooses stories to tell.

The artist pulls from the soft rock and R&B styles of the 1970s and 1980s, the singer-songwriters of the early 2000s, and the current pop sounds of artists like Olivia Dean, FINNEAS, and Sabrina Carpenter. Ellenbogen’s multi-instrumental background has also introduced him to a wide range of musical styles, from jazz to classical, but the artist generally draws upon his influences from pop, indie, and R&B when it comes to his original music.

The EP ‘NUMB’ offers a look into themes of dissociation, emotional detachment, and the struggle to regain a sense of meaning amidst the routines of daily life. This project is rooted in Ellenbogen’s own experiences with mental health, as he candidly details the long and challenging battle that led him to numb himself against everything around him, even cutting himself off from the positive emotions that once brought him joy.

Ellenbogen openly reflects on how this emotional detachment made him feel disconnected from his own emotions, his body, and the world around him. He recounts how days, months, and even years blurred into one another, leaving him struggling to find passion or meaning in the small things around him. Across the EP, he confronts the reality of choosing to keep moving forward, even when answers don’t come easily. He puts it plainly himself: “Even if I feel that numbness, even if it feels like work to be human every day, I’ll continue to push through it until I’m on the other side.”

With ‘NUMB’, Ellenbogen embraces the idea that the way out is through, recognising that healing often comes with uncertainty. He finds strength in his pursuit of what brings meaning to his life, accepting that the path forward may not always be clear. ‘NUMB’ captures the strength it takes to keep pushing through numbness, knowing you don’t have to have all the answers. Ellenbogen realises that the struggle is not about figuring out what’s next, but his focus remains on continuing to move forward, facing the numbness head-on, even as being human becomes work each day. He chooses to keep pushing forward, trusting that something will carry him through to the other side. And along the way, perhaps, he will find meaning to fill him up once more.

With its blend of thoughtful lyricism, melodic hooks, and soulful musicianship, the EP ‘NUMB’ arrives alongside a new video and shows Ellenbogen’s artistic vision, creating music that is both deeply personal and universally accessible. Through these songs, Ellenbogen offers a space where listeners can see themselves reflected, where they can feel understood, and where they can find connection when it matters most.
